The Value & The Costs of
Custom Window Shapes & Sizes
The Value
Windows and doors that reach beyond a manufacturer’s standard size, shape and/or style can enhance the architecture of a new modern home, but will also impact your budget. Their value lies in the flexibility they provide in design. Without the limitations, our team of architects and designers can design windows and doors that are curated to a homeowner’s liking, the general appearance, and even the energy-efficiency of the home. These one-of-a-kind pieces allow our team of designers to fully customize the appearance and material use of products to best address the wants and needs of the home.
Specialty shaped window/doors are only limited by our imagination – anything from circular skylights to oversized pivot doors and more are possible. The benefit that these special features can add to a home is immeasurable. These custom pieces also tend to last longer, as custom woodwork requires a higher quality of wood to be used and less maintenance in the long-term. Lastly, the ability to select custom glass types, casing materials, and/or interior and exterior hardware can enhance the design of a project for both windows and doors.
The Costs
Customizing windows and doors will increase the overall costs of a new modern home because of the time to make and design time that goes into the production and installation of the window. Since a window/door package for a new modern home can sometimes add up to more than 10% of a total construction cost, customization may lead to a dramatic impact on cost. However, if only a few feature pieces throughout the home require customization, this could create some truly unique additions to your home without significantly impacting the budget.
Costs related to material sourcing, application, and installation will all increase costs but will vary depending on the size and complexity of the design package specified by our architects.
Additionally, its important to note that these items will have additional lead times, but with good communication between architects and contractors this should not delay the home’s construction.
