Barbell House
Originally based in Zurich, the homeowners knew they wanted a home with Scandinavian design sensibilities that was easily accessible from the city. As the small communities just outside of NYC continue to fill with young, talented professionals who crave to live amongst nature and in great school districts, this couple saw a perfect opportunity to turn a dense woodland property in Huntington, NY into a perfect place to start their family. The new, custom home addresses the properties context by maximizing views and minimizing the impact on the landscape.
MAXIMIZE VIEWS
The modestly-sized home has minimal impact on the private one-acre woodland
property. This allows the whole rear of the home to look out upon the tall tree-line and offer a feeling of
seclusion just an hour ride from new york city. There is nearly no space in the home that won’t have a
backdrop of lush greenery.
MINIMAL STRUCTURE
A simple "bar scheme" provides the ability for a minimal framing solution
reducing any need for steel in the project, which significantly reduces building costs and environmental
impact. Additionally, The house was set on a 2'x2' grid where the exact center of the plan is the kitchen
island – reinforcing the idea that the communal kitchen is the “heart of the home.”
SUNS PATH & SOLAR
The home’s design uses an integrated trellis system to block the summer sun
from entering the home while still bathing the entire rear of the residence in the afternoon sun. Since the
upper flat roof catches a ton of midday sun, it was an optimum location to maximize the benefit of the solar
energy.
INTERIORS
The home's interior elements all play off the homeowner's initial request for a soft and
tonal color palette. For our finish materials, we honed in on a combination of blush, taupe and light beige
colors providing a harmonious balance between the exterior and interior.
