Free Float

Modern Pool Cabana

Free Float is a pool house that continues THE UP STUDIO's obsession with contextual contradiction. Located on a three acre estate in Sands Point NY, the modern pool house is juxtaposed against the existing traditional home. Using structural gymnastics, a column-free, simple shading area was created to protect occupants from the summer sun while still allowing the structure to feel light and open, maintaining views of the Long Island Sound and surrounding beaches.

The owners — a family of four — originally set out to build a traditional cabana in the style of their house, but discovered that the restrictions of the neo-traditional aesthetic was preventing it from meeting their goals. They then hired UP to create a modern design that could achieve the unobstructed views and flexibility they desired.

The required program was merged into one massing and located on the northeast corner of the site, creating open views of the Long Island Sound and the property. The shade structure was then added, which was designed to be free of columns, by embedding steel into the massing block. This created an open floor plan below.
