A Modern Pool House on a Hill

The Harbor Hill Pool House provides a young family with a covered seating area, modern bath, changing area and walk-in linen closet to create a gathering place surrounded by greenery. Nestled in a lush North Shore, Long Island property, the cabana’s geometric design plays off of the surrounding landscape and makes reference to the aesthetic of the neighboring mid-century modern home.

Since the pool house is most commonly viewed from the home on the hill above, it was crucial to design an appealing roof plane. Linear wood slats wrap up and over the structure, not only provided shade for the seating area below, but also to create a visual rhythm.

The pool house / cabana acts as a sculpture in the property’s rolling landscape. The team studied the sculptural work of artists like Richard Serra and Donald Judd to design a solid, fabricated object that is inserted as a contrast to the property’s flowing, natural landscape.
