Split Branch Manor
In the same way that Long Island’s North and South Forks split to create the natural wonder that is the Peconic Bay, this new Southampton modern home branches and splits to create a planted central courtyard. The new, V-shaped home maximizes views of the nearby farmland and brings greenery into view from every room.
The main gathering spaces and bedrooms of the home are all placed on the property in a way that provides them with expansive views of the farmland abutting the rear of the property. Each of those spaces are then provided with their own covered outdoor living areas. These outdoor seating and dining areas serve as transitional spaces between the interiors and outdoors that naturally draw the family and their guests into nature.
The remaining areas of the home break away from the rear of the house to create a central, triangular courtyard. This area, which is visible from nearly every room of the home, is planted with local grape vines that reference the nearby East End farms and vineyards and fill the interiors with greenery.
As the drive down a long, private Southampton road turns into a linear, gravel driveway, viewers pass by a rhythmic wood facade upon a base of fieldstone. Guests are greeted by a sleek, prominent entry while the homeowners can continue down the driveway to the garages, mudroom and storage areas that are tucked away at the far edge of the property.
