The Value & The Costs of
Pitched / Gable Roofs
The Value
Characterized by two sloping planes that meet at ridge or peak, pitched or gabled roofs are a classic architecture feature that form a triangular shape at each end of the structure. While this roof design is commonly seen in traditional homes, many variations of the classic gable roof can be adapted to fit modern homes, offering both practical and aesthetic benefits. For one, they provide structure stability with their frame of rafters and trusses; the steep slope allows for efficient drainage in regions of heavy rainwater and snow. Inside, the steep slope of a pitched roof offers additional space, but sadly, this space often goes unused due to the sloping ceilings and limited head-heights.
The Costs
Even though a pitched/gable roof often requires more material, they are typically less expensive than flat roofs due to the lower labor costs associated with the more common design and construction. Other factors will obviously affect costs including roofing materials, pitch angle, and other features (like skylights, roof vents, insulation, flashing, or gutter systems). It’s essential to consult with an architect and an experienced roofing contractor to understand the full costs of installing a pitched or gabled roof on your custom modern home.
